Using CUET results, UGC is exploring JEE-style counseling for undergraduate admissions.

According to reports, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is thinking about implementing a centralized counseling system for undergraduate admissions based on CUET scores, which would resemble those for engineering and medical programs.

Five esteemed universities have been chosen for a pilot program, and the UGC has formed a committee with representatives from other universities to investigate this idea. But until the committee determines whether it is feasible, the implementation schedule is unknown.

A source claims that the suggested approach would simplify the admissions procedure by giving students a unified platform to express their choices and doing away with the necessity for multiple applications to different colleges.

M Jagadesh Kumar, the chairman of the UGC, declined to provide any information on the subject.

In the past, the commission had discussed combining the Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG), which was launched in 2022, with the engineering entrance test JEE and the medical entrance exam NEET. But there hasn’t been any development in this area.

CUET has surpassed JEE-Main’s average registration of nine lakh, to become the second-largest entrance test in the nation with over 14.9 lakh registrations. With an average of 18 lakh registrations, NEET-UG continues to be the most popular admission exam in India. Every two years, JEE-Mains is administered online, whereas NEET is a paper exam.

The NEET-UG test is set to take place this year from May 15 to May 31.
