In the Age of AI and Online Learning, What Does It Mean to Be a Teacher Today?
I still remember my English teacher from school. She said, ‘You would never learn English.’ But, that moment shaped me and the way I saw myself. But, growing up I met some great ones too who didn’t just see me as a student, but as a person. If I looked down, they noticed. If I wrote something with extra sparkle, they pointed it out with a smile that made me want to do better. Teachers were the only powerful source of information. ‘Teacher mere bete ko thoda samjhao, gharpe padhai karne bolo!’ such moments where teachers were bridges in every household.
That was almost a few years ago.
Today, the classrooms have changed. Desks have laptops. Students Google answers before the teacher even finishes the question. AI writes essays in seconds. Online platforms explain math problems with visuals, quizzes, and even instant feedback.
So, in this fast-changing world what does it really mean to be a teacher today?
I have wondered.
1. Once upon a time, the teacher knew all the answers. Students sat in neat rows, absorbing knowledge like sponges. But today, students can ask Siri, or ChatGPT, or Khan Academy or Physicswala and get instant responses. Does that mean teachers are no longer needed?
Absolutely not. In fact, they are needed more than ever now, just in a different way. Today’s teacher is not the only source of information. But they are the source of something much deeper: wisdom, empathy, direction.
While the internet gives knowledge, a teacher gives context. While AI can explain what, a teacher helps students understand why it matters.
2. Wearing several hats today. Today’s teachers are no longer just content deliverers. They are:
The Facilitators, helping students discover answers, rather than just giving them.
The First Observers, noticing when a child seems anxious, withdrawn, or unusually quiet.
The Prime Tech Navigators, finding the best apps, platforms, and tools to make learning fun not just for one, but a minimum of 40 students in one go!
The Creative Beyond Canva Designers, building activities, stories, and simulations that make subjects come alive.
The Project Managers, remember the theme based events? Classroom decorations? Class and group projects? The effort to make every child’s crazy idea come alive?
The Cheerleaders, celebrating small wins, motivating students through low days. The trick? To perfect the balance between winning smiles and losing sadness.
So much to do, for so many children in such a short time. No wonder so many teachers feel overwhelmed. But being best at what they do, here’s what we can do!
1. Maybe embrace AI, Don’t Compete With It?
AI is here to stay. So why not make it your assistant, to ease your work.
Let students use AI tools for brainstorming, summarising, or checking grammar but teach them to think critically about what they’re reading. For example, ask them, “Does this make sense?” or “What would you say differently?”
For example, use AI to create worksheets, quiz questions, or even generate ideas for your lessons. Let technology do the heavy lifting so you can focus on connection and communication. Remember, the hero is you!
2. May be focus on human skills:
Social -Emotional Skills. Empathy. Teamwork. Communication. Self-awareness. These are skills no robot can replace.
Create moments in your class where students reflect, share feelings, and listen to one another. You will be surprised how much they value this space. Stories are a powerful way to learn complex life situations. Isn’t it? You know it better.
For example, creating opportunities where students share a word or sentence about their week. Or create cue cards where students write one good thing about a classmate anonymously. You can use AI to create templates. Let’s get the AI to do what it is good at!
3. Maybe let students teach too. Yes, that’s right! Let your students become teachers.
AI is not as experienced with humans the way you. Find your strengths, involve the class, talk to them, let them share. Pick a topic and ask them to explain it to their peers in their own way. Some may choose to draw it. Others may act it out. A few might make a digital presentation.
This not only builds confidence but also gives you fresh teaching perspectives. Sometimes, students explain things to each other better than any adult can!
4. Maybe create a Tech-and-Talk Balance: Use screens for what they do best:
Using videos, simulations, and gamified quizzes. But make room for old-school magic too: storytelling, discussions, and role play. And that’s where you will see talents are born.
Learning thrives when there’s variety. Don’t be afraid to mix it up!
5. Maybe prioritize your own growth, attend workshops and upgrade?
With apps upgrading very often, why can’t we? Maybejoin online teacher communities. Learn a new tool. Or simply take a pause and reflect. The best teachers are not perfect, they are curious.
So yes, the role of the teacher has changed. The policies make it more complex, the challenges are multifold and yes, parents have evolved too. But the heart of teaching? It’s the same. The greatest pillar of the entire system is you.
It’s still about seeing a child not just for their scores, but for their soul.
It’s still about believing in a child, even when they don’t believe in themselves. And that can never be replaced by any app or algorithm.
As a teacher, you are not just preparing students for exams, you are preparing them for life.
Here’s my message to the nation builders: Walk into your classroom, whether physical or virtual, with your head held high and your heart wide open. Because even in the age of AI and online learning, one truth remains:
A good teacher is unforgettable. 🙂
