PM Modi Unveils Kolkata's Mega Projects: India's First Underwater Metro Route and More
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his 10-day visit to 12 states and union territories (UTs), inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for various projects totaling ₹15,400 crore in Kolkata on Wednesday, March 6. This marks his second visit to West Bengal within five days.
The projects inaugurated by PM Modi in Kolkata, West Bengal include:
- Inauguration of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, marking India’s debut into underwater Metro services. Constructed at a cost of ₹4,965 crore, the 4.8-km stretch features the country’s deepest Metro station at Howrah, situated 30 meters below ground level. This corridor will facilitate connectivity to key areas such as the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V. While inaugurated, passenger services for the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section will commence at a later date.
- Flagging off of additional train services aimed at enhancing urban mobility, including the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat Metro sections.
- Dedication to the nation of various metro projects including the Pune Metro from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch, Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension project (Phase IB) from SN Junction Metro station to Tripunithura Metro station, Agra Metro’s stretch from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar, and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor.
Later in the day, PM Modi is scheduled to address a public rally in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district, where Sandeshkhali is located.
During his previous visit to West Bengal, PM Modi addressed rallies in Hooghly’s Arambagh and Nadia’s Krishnanagar, where he criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government for the “atrocities on women” in Sandeshkhali. He urged people to ensure the defeat of TMC in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Additionally, Modi had a courtesy meeting with Mamata Banerjee at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata as per protocol.
