Lapataa Ladies just made two Oscars! The movie which was not about the elegance of Bollywood but about the normality of the country is now going to represent India in the Oscars. The movie is such that it has lessons for everyone, including students. We are living in a society where crimes against women happen day in and day out. Naturally, it is important to keep students, present and the future educated about decreasing the crime and increasing equality. So let’s dive in to understand how Laapataa Ladies can help students.
- Respect Women
The first and foremost point is respecting women. The movie shows how even in local areas and villages of India respect for women is important. Phul’s husband, despite belonging to a village, respects and loves his wife. He also respects Jaya, the woman he doesn’t even know. During the recent Badlapur sexual assault incident, the Maharashtra High Court had clearly stated that it is time that boys are educated, from primary level itself, about respecting women. The court very rightly said, “Beta Padhao, Beti Bachao”.
- Corruption Helps No One, Not Even The Police
Clearly, Ravi Kishan’s character is a representation of corrupt police officers which, unfortunately, is a dark truth of our society. But, in the movie, Kishan’s character takes a turn when he pursues the ‘laapataa ladies’. He speaks up against the man who tries to abuse Jaya and finally removes the cloak of his corruption. This will teach students that corruption is not going to help anyone. If only you can be blind and deaf to everything happening around you can you be a good corrupt officer. But is that even possible? Then why must one see the wrong happening, feel bad and yet do nothing because of the incentives in their hands?
- Ambitious Women
The movie, through the portrayal of Jaya, shows that women too are ambitious and no one has the right to pull them down. Even Phul tried to educate herself through the wisdom of Mnaju Maai. So the movie will teach students that empowering women and empowered women are an equal part of the society. Women have the right to be ambitious and no one has the right to stop them from pursuing their dreams.
- Feminist Men
The movie clealry presents a contrast between a feminist and a patriarchal man. One one side, Phul’s husband not only respects Phul but also Jaya. But on the other side, Jaya’s husband not only abused his first wife but Jaya too. This stark comparison will help students learn about feminism. It will teach them why feminism is important for the development of the society.
So that’s all! Laapataa Ladies, totally deserving of the Oscar nomination, is a lesson for people of every age. The above were some that you can learn. If you noticed something more, do tell us!
