CBSE Class 10 English Exam on February 15: Tips for Attempting, Types of Questions, Do’s and Don’ts

As the CBSE Class 10 exams for the 2024-25 session kick off on February 15, students are gearing up for the English (Communicative) and English (Language and Literature) papers. The exams will commence at 10:30 am and conclude at 1:30 pm. While the pressure is on, experts advise students to use the first 15 minutes of the exam wisely—strategizing a clear approach to tackle each section with calmness and confidence.

Priya Mohan, headmistress of Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Ghaziabad, emphasizes that the English exam demands equal focus on the literature, reading, and writing sections. She notes that the literature section assesses students’ grasp of grammar, vocabulary, and literary analysis, covering prose, poetry, and drama.

Tips for the Poetry Section

When tackling poetry questions, students should focus on poetic devices like imagery, metaphor, and symbolism. Understanding these techniques will allow for a deeper analysis and a more thoughtful response.

Mastering Extract-Based Questions

For extract-based questions, it’s crucial to read the passage carefully before answering. Rather than providing a vague plot summary, responses should be grounded in specific examples and phrases from the text. Thoroughness and precision will make a difference.

Excelling in the Writing Section

To succeed in the writing section, students must maintain coherence throughout their response and stay on topic. Incorporating credible text, backed by evidence or relevant examples, will make the writing more persuasive and engaging, helping to secure full marks.

Mohan advises that students take the time to review summaries, notes, and important phrases from the text, and revise key themes and motifs. She also suggests refreshing their knowledge of writing formats before the exam begins. Above all, she stresses the importance of using the first 15 minutes of the exam to calmly devise a strategy. “Remember, don’t panic!” she adds.

Managing Exam Stress

If you encounter a difficult question, Mohan suggests identifying the key terms that highlight what’s being asked. For more complex questions, break them into manageable parts to ensure clarity and focus in your response.

As the headmistress offers her best wishes, she reminds students that while the exam may feel overwhelming, it’s important to remember that it is only a test—not a reflection of your worth. “Taking care of your health leading up to the exams is just as important,” she advises. “Stay calm, hydrated, and follow a balanced diet. Engaging in light exercises will also help keep you focused and energized during this crucial time.”

With the right mindset and preparation, students can approach their English exam with confidence and poise.
