A trial run of open-book exams in a few schools is planned by CBSE.
Officials from CBSE have announced that later this year, a pilot test of open-book exams for grades IX through XII will take place in a few chosen institutions. The concept was brought up at the Board’s most recent meeting in December 2023. Board officials, however, state that there is no intention to use this format for the class X and XII board exams.
For classes 9 and 10, English, Mathematics, and Science; for classes 11 and 12, English, Mathematics, and Biology; CBSE is organizing a trial run of open-book assessments in a few schools.
The purpose of this exam is to determine how long it takes pupils to finish it and to get input from stakeholders.
“The plan adheres to the National Curriculum Framework’s guidelines. A top board official stated that these examinations would go through a pilot program in schools to analyze a number of factors, including completion time, fit for formative and summative assessment, and stakeholders’ opinions.
Students are permitted to bring their notes, textbooks, or other study materials to an open-book exam (OBE) and use them as reference materials.
Assessment of higher-order thinking skills, application, analysis, critical and creative thinking, and problem-solving ability will be the main goals of the pilot. The pilot testing of the materials in schools is scheduled for November and December of 2024, while the design, development, and evaluation of open book tests is scheduled to be finished by June of that same year.
The technique could be applied to internal exams to encourage pupils to think creatively. The OBE format is not intended to be used for the CBSE class 10 and 12 board exams; this is just the ideation stage, according to a source.
