Teachers Day: Values That Make A Good Teacher

Teachers Day is a reminder that teachers are our first companions when it comes to seeking knowledge. Kabir’s Doha rightly said that if parents and teachers are standing together, one should touch the feet of the teachers first because they told us what parents mean. So, teachers play an important role in the lives of each one of us.

However, today, time is changing, Teachers are no longer just teachers. They are crossing boundaries and committing actions that make the value of teachers bow down due to shame. In the past few days, many cases of teachers sexually assaulting their students have come to the fore. Moreover, teachers exercising authority over students and punishing them harshly is another prevalent issue.

So, this Teachers Day, let us focus on five values that make a good teacher.

  1. Knowledge

Knowledge is, of course, the first requirement for a person to be a teacher. The role of a teacher is to provide knowledge to students that empowers them and turns them into knowledgeable and powerful beings.

  1. Compassion

No teacher can thrive if they are not compassionate. Compassion is the basic requirement for humanity to thrive. And teachers are educating a new humanity. So if teachers practice compassion, students too will practice it, making the future happy. Moreover, without compassion, teachers will never be able to connect with their students. This brings us to next value- connection

  1. Connection

teachers must connect with their students and understand their issues. Not every student has the same life and opinions. Many are different from the common crowd of students. If teachers do not connect with students on a personal level, they will never be able to understand different students. And lack of understanding will lead to incomplete education and discrimination.

  1. Morality

Teachers must be moral. They must know what is right and what is wrong. They must never cross the line of right and wrong and indulge in things that make the entire community of teachers ashamed.

  1. Connection with parents

Teachers must not only have a good connection with each of their students but with their parents too. Many parents deny accepting that their children are different. They don’t want to know how their children are different but only why their children are not scoring well. So it is the teacher’s work to make the parents understand and convince them about the uniqueness in each student.

So that’s all! Teachers need to embody these values to be a true companion of their students. As Karl Meninger rightly said, “What a teacher is, is more important than what he teaches.”

Happy Teachers Day!
